2019 A7 Prototype Caught Out and About

Audi’s next-gen A7 isn’t expected until 2019, however, the luxury car manufacturer is already far along with the car’s redesign. The latest prototype was recently spotted on the roads, being taken for a spin. While the design was kept under wraps – literally – there’s a fair bit we can tell about the new approach from afar.

1. New look can be credited to new Audi design boss Marc Lichte

While the actual design of the vehicle was well kept under wraps, it bears a similar resemblance to Audi’s Prologue concept, which was unveiled at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show. Its approach comes from Audi’s design boss, Marc Lichte, who admitted that his aim with the 2019 A7 is to inject greater visual differentiation between this model and the mechanically similar A6.

For those unfamiliar with Lichte, he’s been Head of Audi Design since February 1, 2014. In this role, he is responsible for Exterior and Interior Design, the Color & Trim area, and also the designs of racing cars.

2. A7 design breakdown

The 2019 A7 will feature the same imposing, hexagonal-shaped grill and chiseled surfaces. Its lines will remain just as intense from front to back where a Kammback tail is located. There is also partially extended rear wings that will sit flush with the bodywork.

3. A7 platform

The 2019 A7 platform is the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Design, which gained notoriety when introduced in the 2017 Q7. Its claim to fame is a significant reduction in weight along with more alternative powertrains.

4. A7 engine

It’s expected the 2019 A7 engine will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter, inline-4 model that delivers 250+ horsepower and roughly 273 pound-feet of torque. This particular engine type was first introduced in the 2017 A4.

Audi has also suggested that a hybrid A7 will be made available, along with possibly a fuel cell-equipped version.

5. Added technologies

All new Audi’s are equipped with the latest cutting-edge technologies, and the 2019 A7 is no different. The vehicle is expected to feature a self-driving mode that can handle things like parking situations as well as traveling in traffic at speeds of up to 37 mph. This system, referred to as Audi AI, is already available on the redesigned A8 model.
