5 Facts About the Audi Quattro and Sport Quattro Rally Cars
What do you know about the Audi Quattro and Quattro Sport rally cars?
1. First Four-Wheel Drive Rally Car
In the early 80's, competition racing rules (Group B) were changed to allow the use of four-wheel drive in rally cars. The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of this rule change, and Audi went on to win several competitions for the next few years with the A1 and A2 evolutions of the Quattro.
2. First Female Driver to Win Big
Michèle Mouton was the first female driver to win a world championship rally in 1981. Her car? An Audi Quattro, of course! Later, in 1985, Mouton won (and set a new record for) the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb driving a Sport Quattro.
3. A2 Evolution Revolution
Drivers of the A2 evolution of the Quattro won eight world rallies from 1983-84. From 1984-88, the A2 also came out ahead in the South African National Rally Championships and won the 13th Silvretta Classic Montafon in 1988.
4. Hello, Sport Quattro
Developed for Group B rallying in 1984, the Audi Sport Quattro S1 had an all aluminum alloy 2.1 L engine slightly smaller than the Audi Quattro. The Sport Quattro S1 E2 was an update to the S1 and featured an incline 5-cylinder engine.
5. Quattro Legacy
The Sport Quattro S1 and S1 E2 were the last Group B cars produced by Audi, and the last race won was at Pikes Peak in 1987. Because the original Audi Quattro rally car was so successful, all subsequently manufactured Audis equipped with four-wheel drive were adorned with the "quattro" badge. This feature has remained the same since.
