1. Second time around

Audi once again unleashes the R8 V10 upon the world but this time as the Spyder variant that owners and journalists alike love. The changes with this new model are a cockpit that is pushed forward into a slightly wider, shorter car than before. The lightweight chassis is mostly aluminum but stiff enough that even with the top down the car will feel planted to the road.

2. The performance

From what has been reported, the engine that calls the Spyder home is heading off into the sunset after the model is done. The high-revving 5.2-liter putting out 540 horsepower and 398 lbs-ft of torque is a relic in terms of being a naturally aspirated powerplant.  But by all means, the engine is a glorious thing that will have its swan song be one of thunderous throttle blips and effortless tire chirps. Word on the street is that the car will make the trek from zero to sixty in just 3.6 seconds and top out speed wise at a heart clenching 198 mph.

3. Creature comforts

Unfortunately, there is still no manual transmission version available for the new Spyder just as it was for the coupe counterpart. The seats for the owner and passenger can adjust in 18 directions to keep the both of you in a wonderfully comfortable position despite the twists and turns you may be navigating. If for some inexplicable reason you grow tired with the roar of the V10, there is the Bang and Olufsen system that has speakers nestled into the headrests to keep you jamming on your automotive adventures.

4. New tech to the Spyder

Other new items that are getting their proverbial day in the sun with the Spyder are the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display that relays vital info to the driver at a refresh rate of 60 frames per second. There is also the Audi Connect system that gives customers 4G LTE connectivity, destination entry via myAudi, travel info, and a Wi-Fi hotspot to keep passengers happy during road trips.

5. Open up

The relative to the Huracan will once again employ a fabric roof which can be opened and closed in seconds flat and can be done up to speeds of 31 mph. It will hide away under the carbon-fiber engine cover close to the mighty V10 powerplant. For those concerned with the weight that the convertible system will add to the car need to set their fears aside as the mechanism adds only 97 lbs to the car. Audi has gone to great lengths to make the electro-hydraulics that actuate the system as light as possible.

If you are interested in the new R8 Spyder, be sure to tell your accountant while they are sitting down since it will set you back a cool $176,350. We're sure it's worth every penny to have a bit of fun in the sun with this amazing Audi vehicle.
