1. Horch 14-17 hp Tonneau, 1904

August Horch left the Benz company in 1899 to start building cars under his own name. The first cars were buing produced by 1901, but it wasn't until the advent of the Horch 4 cylinder model, with nearly 20hp that things really took off. Rated at between 14-17hp, depending on displacement, the production version pictured above was made for 5 years and considered better than both Mercedes and Benz offerings at the time.

2. Auto Union Type A Grand Prix, 1933

The interesting thing about this race car is that Ferdinand Porsche designed it under contract to Auto Union. It's not uncommon to hear Porsche and Audi in the same sentence today, but they have worked together on various projects since the 1930s. This advanced mid engined V16 powered car competed on the AVUS race in 1934, setting 3 world records in Berlin. Its record breaking top speed was over 295kmh, nearly 185mph!

3. Audi F103, 1965

This vehicle was presented at the 1965 International Motor Show simple called "Audi" and was based on the previous DKW F102. Later on, the car was identified as the Audi 60, 72, 80 or 90, depending on power output. Power came from a modern Mercedes 4 cylinder that had been developed for military use, but never put into production, with displacements from 1.4 to 1.8 liters, front wheel drive, and 4 speed manual transmissions.

4. Audi B3 90 Quattro, 1987

This newly upmarket Audi was born in 1987 and remained in production for 5 years selling more than 1.2 million vehicles. Audi finally sought to distance themselves from VW, and this new car featured luxury trim, typical German car ride and handling, and the unique all-wheel drive Quattro system.

5. Audi S2 Coupe, 1988

Born from it's predecessor, the Audi 80, this was one of the first compact performance coupes built by Audi. In North America we got a Quattro Coupe that is similar, but with only 164hp from the 20v 5 cylinder and no turbo, but in Europe the S2 turbo put out over 200hp through the quattro system. All of the later modern Audi S cars started with this hot hatchback.
