"Silver Award" for the A2
The A2 has received one of the most coveted and most famous design awards from a British jury: the British Design and Art Direction (D&AD), the national guild of the design and advertising industry, presented Audi's compact five-door model with its Silver Award.
Representatives of AUDI AG accepted the award in front of 2500 spectators at London's Earl's Court Exhibition Centre. Paul Priestman, spokesman of the jury of experts, cited the pioneering design and overall concept of the A2 as the reasons for its success.
21,702 entries competed for the 2001 D&AD Awards. Having narrowed the field down to 122 nominations, the jury finally chose 50 candidates for the Silver and four for the Gold Awards.
The A2 was the only award-winning car in this group. In the 39-year history of these awards the D&AD jury has only ever selected two cars: before the A2, an Audi TT Coupé won a D&AD Award.
