Audi TDI Technology Breaks International Records Audi makes some of the world's most powerful and fastest diesel-powered cars - and that's now official. Completely standard Audi A2, A4 and A8 TDI models recently succeeded in breaking numerous international and British speed records. The records were set by an A2 1.4 TDI, an A4 1.9 TDI and an A8 3.3 TDI at Millbrook in England, witnessed by official time-keepers and scrutineers from the MSA (Motor Sports Association). Experienced British speed record drivers Angus Hamilton and Tony Goodwin drove the three vehicles, which qualified in the 1100-1500cc (A2), 1500-2000cc (A4) and 3000-5000cc (A8) diesel classes. They set a total of eleven international and 39 British records. Highlights of the record-breaking weekend included average speeds of 109.21 mph (miles per hour; approx. 175.7 km/h) for the A2, 128.94 mph (approx. 207.5 km/h) for the A4 and 149.72 mph (approx. 240.9 km/h) for the A8 3.3 TDI over 5 km with a flying start. The two millionth diesel-powered Audi rolled off the production line at Audi's Neckarsulm plant just four months ago, 23 years after the very first Audi diesel model. The first Audi 80 with diesel engine was built back in 1978. The revolutionary Audi 100 TDI with the world's first diesel engine with direct injection and electronic engine management heralded in a new era - and not just for Audi - at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Today's Audi TDI engines utilise three different injection systems: pump-injector for the three and four-cylinder units, radial-piston injection pump for the six-cylinder engines and common rail for Audi's flagship, the 3.3-litre eight-cylinder unit. The success of innovative TDI technology is reflected in the production figures. Last year more than 260,000 Audi cars were equipped with a TDI engine, approximately 40 percent of the overall production at Audi.
