Audi Presenting Sponsor of the 2003 Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz
The countdown is on: In exactly one year on 1st February 2003, the Alpine World Ski Championships begin in St. Moritz. AUDI AG is the presenting sponsor of the most important sporting event that has ever been run in Switzerland. More than 100,000 spectators are expected at the race in Engadin next year, with over 300 million people following the world championship on television. 400 athletes from 60 countries will compete. With the "Corviglia", ski-run architect Bernhard Russi, the former world class downhill skier, has created a run that throws every type of challenge at ski racers. The "Piz Nair start" is the longest and steepest start slope in racing history. The 130 metre steep face in the rocks of the Piz Nair feature a gradient of 45 degrees, which corresponds to a drop of 100 percent. In just seven seconds competitors reach a speed of over 130 kph. "You usually only see such starts in motor racing," says Russi. The World Cup race held this weekend serves as a baptism of fire for the "Corviglia". After a 21-year-break almost all the world´s men´s elite skiers will gauge the Piz Nair a year prior to the world championships.
AUDI AG presents the Alpine World Ski Championships 2003 in St. Moritz. "This engagement fits perfectly to Audi," says Dr Georg Flandorfer, board member for marketing and sales at AUDI AG. "Within the Volkswagen Group, Audi represents the `sporting line´," says Flandorfer. Winter sport is a perfect platform to authentically present the sportiness of the Audi brand to their customers.
Over the years AUDI AG has proved to be a reliable partner in winter sport. In the 2001/2002 ski season Audi partners again all important events: the Four Hills Tournament for ski jumpers, the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel or the Ski World Cup in St. Moritz. Audi will also be involved in winter sport in the future: As well as next year´s Alpine World Ski Championships, Audi will also be the presenting sponsor of the 2005 world championships in Bormeo. At the nordic world championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme and 2005 in Oberstdorf (D), AUDI AG is one of the main sponsors.
