World Final of Best Amateur Golfers in South Africa

November 3, 2003

Teams from Slovenia and Ireland win Audi quattro Cup

– Close finishes in both handicap groups
– 108 golfers from 32 nations tee up
– Competitors impressed by golf course in Sun City

The winners of the 2003 Audi quattro Cup World Final come from Slovenia and Ireland: Marko Stirn / Franci Bukovnik won their group by a single point in Sun City (South Africa). A “sudden death” play off decided the winner of the second group, in which the Irish duo Tom Mulvihill / Grimes Eamon beat the Spaniards Juan Roberto Garcia and Francisco Javie Martin. “It’s fabulous to have won this final,” explained an overjoyed Marko Stirn, who drives an Audi A6. “It was, however, even better that we were actually able to compete on this unique stage during the tournament.”

More than 75,000 players participated in the world’s largest amateur tournament for ambitious golfers this year. The best were invited to the world final in South Africa and were treated to the remarkable “Palace of the Lost City” hotel and one of the world’s most stunning and difficult golf courses, the “Gary Player Country Club Golf Course”.

108 golfers from 32 nations competed in the World Final. “They entertained us with three days of fabulous golf,” explained Mike van der Zee, Marketing Manager of Audi South Africa. “It was an unforgettable experience for every participant.”

On the 7,000 metre plus long course and in the incredible heat, with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius in the shade, the Audi quattro Cup finalists had to deliver great performances. “Stamina was the order of the day in these extreme conditions,” said Bernd Quinzler, Head of Sport Sponsoring of AUDI AG. “I have the greatest respect for the performance of every single competitor. The Audi quattro Cup has again assembled the best amateur golfers from around the world. The atmosphere amongst the `Audi Golf Family’ was excellent.”

The Audi quattro Cup has been held since 1991, and is played as “Four-Ball Better Ball”. Each team consists of two golfers, who play the ball alternately after teeing off. At the world final there are two groups subdivided according to their respective handicaps. The successful tournament will be continued next year. Europe will host the 2004 Audi quattro Cup World Final.
