The renowned Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the USA has awarded the Audi A6 its highest rating of “double best pick”. This is the outcome of a frontal and a side crash test which this Audi saloon completed in the USA.

The A6 is already the third Audi model to earn the “double best pick” title this year. The Audi A4 saloon also received this top award for passive safety just a few weeks ago. By virtue of its identical safety equipment, the Institute also awarded its top rating to the Audi A4 Avant. This makes Audi the leading brand in the latest IIHS crashworthiness ratings.

The side impact test represents a particularly challenging part of the IIHS crash test series. In this test, vehicles are struck by a moving barrier at a speed of 31 mph (50 km/h). The barrier is shaped to resemble the front end of a pick-up or SUV. After the frontal and side crash tests, structural deformation as well as the kinematics and biomechanical stresses to which passengers are subjected are evaluated. The outstandingly low loads measured for the A6 are thanks to its rigid body and standard restraint systems, including the sideguard head-level airbag.

The IIHS regularly carries out crash tests on behalf of the US insurance industry on passenger vehicles of all kinds to establish their safety standard. Experts and car buyers alike, both within and outside the USA, pay considerable attention to the results.
