The event starts later that morning with the slower classes up first. Small Fiats, VW Polos, and Opels battle it out for a hard earned 17+ second time. As the day goes on the cars get faster and faster. Soon we’re seeing M3’s, STi’s, and Evos running 12’s and 13’s. Late in the afternoon we finally see Arek’s car slowly pull up to the staging area. We position ourselves just a few feet off to the side of the track around where the 60’ mark would be. Arek is set to run against a highly tuned Audi S2. Arek stages his car and gives an OK gesture to the starter. The same is done for the red S2. The crowd’s silence at the upcoming spectacle is overwhelmed as Arek arms his nitrous system and brings the S4 up to launching RPM. GREEN! As Arek dumps the clutch, more than 1000 horsepower is fed though the quattro driveline. The car squats on its Bilstein suspension and the rear Hoosier slicks literally buckle from the twisting forces and weight transfer. The engine revs instantly as the short 1st gear is quickly run out. 2nd comes and goes with equal authority as the brightly painted S4 roars past. Immediately after shifting into 3rd we hear a slight misfire and then an excruciatingly loud bang. The crowd sighs. Instead of continuing his rocket ride down the airstrip, Arek smartly pulls his car off the left side of the course as soon as possible. Things don’t look good at this point. Before we’ve followed the trail of oil to the parked Audi, the fire department and tow truck are on the scene. Arek is obviously slightly distraught, but once again takes the disappointment in stride. This is racing. A small hole in the oil pan suggests a rather serious engine problem and unfortunately the end of Arek’s 2006 racing season.
On the bright side, Arek’s teammate Marcin Czernic is still in the hunt for the Outlaw class title with his AWD Subaru Imreza. His efforts end up being good enough to take 1st place with a 9.953 second run. The black VTG tuned Audi S4 (with full interior!!!) took in a handful of very impressive 10 second timeslips as well. This car was particularly impressive since it looked relatively stock inside and out. Rumors say this car can be found street racing in Russia for large sums of money, but we cannot confirm one way or the other. The runner up prize went to the C3 Corvette. The Corvette’s time was 10.373 seconds.
At the end of the day, things didn’t work out as Arek had planned. We later received word that the engine damage suffered during the race was very minor. A signal wheel for the Autronic stand-alone engine management system had become loose within the crankcase. Once free, it managed to punch a small hole in the bottom of the oil pan. After the pan and sensor were replaced, the engine started right up according to the Kreator Mocy team. So what’s up next for Arek and his team? In the off-season they will continue to work on increasing the revving capability of the 2.7T engine with 10,000 RPM remaining as the goal. It looks like the mechanical valve actuation may take more development to run properly. Arek has also mentioned he may be interested in taking his car to the USA in order to try his luck on US dragstrips. Unfortunately Arek’s major sponsor, Lotos Oil, is a Polish-only brand. Traveling to the US does not increase their brand recognition so they are unwilling to financially support a North American trip. That said if Arek can overcome the financial and sponsorship hurdle, we may be seeing his silver S4 Avant in the US sometime in the future. Waterfest would be a solid first guess. AudiWorld will of course post updates on Arek’s efforts as he continues to see just how fast a stock block full unibody Audi Avant can actually go.
