Description: A Compact, sophisticated, accurate and transportable electronic
vehicle compass and more.

Being a pilot and typical "guy" who never likes to ask for directions (...at least on the ground), an accurate compass is something that comes in handy quite often when in unfamiliar territory.  PNI Corp. makes a sophisticated, self-contained, electronic, digital vehicle compass model V6000 that I found offered at Costco for about $60 dollars. I had tried a simple magnetic floating compass in my Audi previously and found that due to external magnetic interference, it danced and twirled more than Janet Jackson. PNI makes and markets other similar electronic compass models, but the V6000 has the combination of features I like best:

Holographic LCD Hi-contrast display, a compass rose with arrow pointing to 16 cardinal headings, a digital readout in degrees, compass bearing point storage, outside/ interior temperature with ice alert in degrees F or C, selectable barometer or altimeter with up-down trend and micro-processed weather forecast, programmable blue-green backlight display, auto shut-off and an extra mount to switch between two vehicles.  The sophisticated, patented, micro-processed magnetic sensor calibrates, calculates and measures direction with respect to your individual vehicle's magnetic field and a distortion indicator alerts you to magnetic interference form outside sources (steel bridges, overpasses, semi-trucks etc.). I modified the supplied mount and attached it to a curved aluminum piece that velcros to the dash top just right of the instrument cluster. This bracket is hidden by a carpeted dash cover. The V6000 runs on a small 3v camera battery and can be connected to a cig. lighter receptacle. I disassembled the adapter plug and hard-wired my unit (with fuse). A built-in photosensor turns on the backlight at night.  I calibrated the altimeter at my residence using the fixed mean sea level elevation of our nearby police heliport. The unit performs accurately as advertised. Visit PNICorp.Com or Contact PNI in Santa Rosa, CA at (888) 422-6672.
