APR 1.0 bar Chip By: James Corell Email: JACorell@intermdia.com (Aug-99) Make & model of car the product was used on: 1999 Audi A4 1.8 tqms Avant Product Description: APR 1.0 bar chip including spare OEM ECU 6,850 miles on APR's 1.0 bar chip. My 1st impression was like many with the upgrade "WOW!". APR installed my upgraded ECU in about 5 minutes at their shop. Brett and Stephen continually prove to be knowledgeable & trustworthy people with strong products. Very little perceived turbo lag with a sudden rush of torque. So much more power with NO trouble. Florida heat, each day +100F, and hard driving have yet to induce any deleterious effects. My wife loves the chip too and proceeded to get her first speeding ticket in years on the same trip as the upgrade! I use 93 octane gas from predominantly Shell stations. I always check for new tanks.
The car is a totally different "BEAST!!" Installation was a breaze with the help of AUDIBOY. It took about 10 minutes to do the complete install. The instructions provided with the ECU were very detailed and exact, not to mention all the help I received from both Stephen and Chris at APR via phone. Although my car is TIP, it still gets up and goes at a stomp of the accelerator. Highway cruising feels like stock but when you downshift and stomp down, you definitely feel the rush come on at about 3000 RPMs all the way to redline. Its the best $600 investment one can make for their 1.8t, TIP or not.
Anyway, let me get on with it. I finally decided that APR would be the choice. It wasn't because of the southern politeness, or the patience that Chris exercised while fielding question after question. It was that it finally dawned on me that these guys really do know what they are doing. And they are committed to long term follow through with research and development. I guess that's enough complimentary conversation . . . but the boys on Opelika road have it together. I was going to be out of town for a couple of days, so wednesday night I overnighted my ecu. APR returned it the next day, so it was waiting for me. Here's what happened to my little A4 (2000, manual, quattro, sport suspension). It woke up! The new software smoothed out the idle, improved shifting, and generally made the car rock solid. Oh yes, and it is fast. Unbelievably fast, and yet in a very linear fashion. No herky-jerky, sudden bursts of power . . . its kinda like the factory only more of everything when you want it. Now bear in mind, I am going to be 54 next month (june). So I'm not a young hot rodder, or an old fart just yet. I was driving 2002's when they were $3,500 brand spanking new. And over the years, there have been a couple of Mercedes and most recently a Lexus or two, but last night when my wife asked me what I would buy if I somehow had won the big lottery. I didn't have to stop and think at all. It would of course be my CarOrder (a little below invoice) 1.8t tuned by APR. Thanks guys.

(Nov-01) Product Description: APR 1.0 bar chip AMAAZING! This is how the car should be sold from the dealer. Prior to purchasing a chip, I had concerns about voiding the car warranty; however, having discussions with 2 different Audi dealers about chipping helped diminish my concerns ... After enjoying my "stock" car for approximately 11,000. kms., I purchased the APR chip this week. Approx. 20 minutes is what it took to install the ECU and I was ready to go for a drive. The additional power was very smooth across the band as well as tremendous from 3,000 rpm upward. In the past, downshifting to 4rth to pass on the highway was usually a must but no longer a requirement. I've driven more than 1,000 kms. in the past few days and am still looking for errands to run just to go for a drive. The flipswitch option is a sweet bonus as well. As far as comparing other chips and for what it's worth, I recently drove another A4 (1999 version of mine) with an MTM chip in it and my car definitely feels a lot stronger when punching the throttle. GO APR !!!

(Mar-02) Had the APR chip installed about a month
ago. After a month of various driving conditions (highway,
city stop and go, and twisty roads), I have to say the chip is
pretty good. I would have rated it excellent except for
the pinging problem under WOT in 2nd and 3rd gear. Also,
the power drops off a lot in the higher gears. In 1st, it
pulls hard to the redline. In 2nd, it pulls to 5500 then drops
off a lot. In 3rd, it pulls to 5300 then drops off enough
to start slowing the car down if you don't upshift. In 4th and
5th, the power gain is minimal. My top speed also dropped
from 127mph to 122 mph because in 5th, the chipped A4 will not
pull beyond 5500 rpm. When I called Jeremy at APR about the
pinging problem and told him I was using 92 octane from Shell or
Chevron, he did not take my problem seriously. He stated
that there is no way the APR chip can ping on 92 octane and gave
me the impression that I was not telling the truth. It
seems that APR does not take pinging seriously like Garrett
does. If I had to do it again, I would probably go with a
Garrett performance chip. One bright note, the chip does pull
very hard in the first 3 gears until the power tapers off.
So it's ideal in stop and go traffic as long as you upshift
before the power drops off. Also if you have the APR chip
installed at a authorized Audi dealer, the dealer KEEPS YOUR
STOCK CHIP.

(Jan-03) I've been a skeptic for many years about how
installation the of a "chip" really affects overall
performance. I have had many cars, and always considered
adding a chip to enhance performance. Well, I
finally decided to go ahead and install an APR chip in my 2001
A4 1.8T daily driver and I couldn't be happier. The price
to performance ratio is astonishing and the car has a completely
different personality. I also own a couple of other cars
including a Porsche 993 and I have to say, my Audi is now nearly
as entertaining to drive as my Porsche! I've only had the
chip installed for a short time, but so far so good as
reliability is concerned. I had the work done at Rapid
Parts in Monsey NY which is an |
