Product Description:MTM chip vs. APR chip

In case you don't already know, I'm the guy who sent back the APR chips and bought the MTM chips.

I gave an initial report on my thoughts about the MTM chip on the forums. I drove the car over 300 miles today and really put it through the paces.

MTM beats the APR chip hands down. Even if it were not faster (which it is, at least the revision of the APR chip I had), it would still win the contest due to its smoothness and consistency. The MTM chip works great in all driving situations.

I ran the car from 0 to 130MPH(I never rev the engine and dump the clutch)close to redline in every gear and it is smooth as silk, not one glitch. I also repeated the timed tests I did last week with the APR chips installed. The MTM chip was over a second faster in each test.

The first test was 1500 to 5000 RPM in 3rd gear. Again I let the car settle to 1500 and punch the gas and my Robic timer at the same time.

I recorded times of 7.27 sec on the first run and 7.11 sec on the second run. If you would like to see the APR times I clocked you can check the archives about a week ago. They were over 8 seconds on the first run and over 14 seconds on the 6th gear run. The second test was 2000 to 4000 RPM in 6th gear. My times were 12.66 and 12.79 seconds.

I am very picky about the way a car runs and if it is not right I will say so. It was not right with the APR chips and I sent them back. The MTM chips are flawless and I will keep them. I have no regrets spending the extra $200.

I think all the chips are overpriced, but if you are going to do it you might as well get the best.

On the exhaust note issue, I like the way it sounds. Backpressure will not hurt the turbos. Granted, the engine will run stronger with less backpressure on a turbo engine. Increased boost will shorten the life of a turbo, but 1 bar is not that much boost and to me the extra power is worth the risk.

I have no association with MTM or APR other than having been a customer of both. I would also like to say that APR's customer service is exemplary. I just like MTM's chip a lot better.

Also I am not trying to make anyone mad, I am just reporting what my opinion is. If you are going to chip, read all the posts about chipping and make a decision based on that. My timed runs are not opinion. I was very careful in duplicating exactly what I had done with the APR chips when timing the MTM chips. Weather conditions were similar and I had a fuller tank with the MTM chip runs. APR suggested that the difference was due to the fact I only had 850 miles on the car when I tested their chip. I only had 900 miles on the car when I tested the MTM chip. I can not see this small difference in milage making that much difference. I noticed the day I changed the chips that the MTM chips were smoother and stronger.
