Make & model of car the product was used on:
2000 A4 1.8T Quattro
Over the years I have added a GIAC stage I
chip, s4 wheel well vents, HKS cool air
intake, and APR v.2 cat back exhaust, so I
felt it was time to upgrade the clutch.
I searched around and decided to go with SPEC
clutch out of Alabama USA. The decision was
finally made after speaking with them on the
phone (price and clamping power wise they were
all pretty close), I decided to order the
stage II clutch and at the same time wanted
the lighter aluminum flywheel, so I ordered
them together, I had spoke with a man named
Pete over at spec and told him my concerns
with ordering parts form the states directly
(I live in Halifax, Canada), and he assured me
he sells lots of these clutch applications and
they stand behind their products.
Finally, 1 week, and $1000USD later the
package came in, I rushed it to the local
performance shop which specializes in european
cars, and had them install it, everything fit
fine....or so we thought, 10 hours and $500CDN
later we went to start the car, and it wasn't
cranking, it sounded like the starter gear was
grinding with the flywheel, we couldn't figure
it out, I called spec and talked to Pete
again, and he told me there's nothing wrong
with the flywheel he sells many applications,
I told him well it could be possible that the
flywheel is defective, but for some reason he
refused to believe one of his products could
be defective.
We ended up taking the engine apart again, and
took off the flywheel, and measured it against
the stock flywheel, and there was a minor
variation in size, we also tested the starter
(Pete said there's something wrong with the
starter not the flywheel) needless to say the
starter was fine.
So I finally decided to have my OEM flywheel
machined and re-installed with the stage II
clutch.
I then contacted Pete and told him I was
sending the flywheel back, he then told me
"because we want to stand behind our
products, we'll take the flywheel back and
refund your money" I told him I also
wanted him to cover the extra labor (we had to
take everything apart again, and re-install
the stock flywheel because the SPEC one didn't
fit properly), but he refused, so after a few
hours (long distance) of talking I finally
decided to cut my losses and just settle for
the refund, (minus the $250 in duties and
taxes and shipping).
So at the end of the day, the clutch feels
similar in pedal pressure as to the OEM
clutch, however clamping power is better.
Overall I would definitely recommend an
upgrade in the clutch if you have done similar
mods to your car, however I would STAY AWAY
FROM SPEC if at all possible, they are
frustrating to deal with, they don't stand
behind their products, and they have no means
of resolving a problem which they are directly
responsible for.
Thought I'd let you all know..
Good luck!!
