H&R Race / Bilstein Sport Struts

Make & model of car the product was used on: 98.5 A4 1.8T Quattro

I purchased H&R Race springs with Bilstein Sport Struts from AIM. I chose the Race cause I was after the lowered look. My car came equipped with factory sport suspension that had a 3/4" drop. The car handeled good but it would "bob and lean" during sporty manuvers in So Cal's highway traffic.

I was after a 2 inch drop and by calculating through using stanly measurements and visual sight of other A4's I noticed that every one who went with a Eibach or H&R sport set up gained a 1.5" drop in avg. With my .75" drop that is only .5" more which would not do much. The H&R gave me the full drop I wanted -- 2.0" which is perfect for my 18X8" wheels.

Kit: 4 red race springs progressive rate, 4 yellow Bilstein Struts. Front struts have 5 grooves set at .5" apart. Rear struts has 4 grooves also set at .5" apart.

My set up: I had my car set at #3 ring in front and #3 ring in the back. By doing this I had a .5" gap front and a 1" gap in the rear. The front was ok but the rear is too high. I had the rear dropped to #4 ring and that gave the car a .5" stance front and back which is perfect (the rings were counted from Top of strut being #1 to bottom of strut #4).

Performance: after the instalation I drove the car for a while I was starting to regret the race springs they seem too hard and very harsh in ride. After roughly 1,000 miles the suspension tamed down by 90%. The car does not lean in turns -- I noticed that I can take almost any turn at a considerably high amount of speed. The ride in a line is good also not as smooth as before but it has it's share of comfort. The car bounces a bit but it is not a hard bounce it is smooth and controlled. If you are a avid sport driver I would recommend this set up. If you are a every day wanna be sport driver go for the sport springs as you might think the race is too hard.

Note: My car has the sport swaybars and sport seats so the harsh and bumpy ride is less if you have the standard equipment. I wold recommend the sport swaybars!!!.

P.S. I would also do this over again with no hesitation!!!!!!!! The handeling is superb just like a race car or better yet "a car on rails".
