H&R Cup Kit for FWD A4's

Make & model of car the product was used on: 2001 A4 FWD manual

The H&R Cup Kit is what I was told H&R recommends for FWD A4's because the suspension setup is different from the Quattro's and they do not manufacture either their race nor sport springs for the FWD setup.  The cup kit consists of springs, matched Bilstein shocks, and a new cup assembly.  The springs are supposedly stiffer than the sport springs but softer than the race springs.  H&R advertises a drop of 2.1" front and 1.7" rear.

For a little background on my car, I have a FWD A4 manual with the sport package.  For shoes, I have BF Goodrich Euro TA 225's on TSW Trophy 18x8's.

I purchased my springs from a local San Diego shop, Group 5 (858.693.3278).  I paid $689.00 for the kit and $260 for install.  Group 5 took a full day to install the springs.  When I received the car the rear was quite jacked up.  It was only a small drop from where the back was.  The front dropped right down to about a one and a half-finger gap.  The rear had about a two and a half to almost three-finger gap.

Almost one month after install the kit has settled nicely.  I loaded the trunk with two subwoofer boxes to help the rear settle more.  Now the front has about a one-finger gap and the rear has about a one and a half finger gap.

The ride of the kit is very smooth.  Even with such a drop the car rides as smooth as the original sport package suspension.  However, the springs are not stiff enough for this drop and there is way too much body roll.  Because of the excessive body roll, I am experience moderate to severe rubbing on my inner fender liner on greater than 90 degree turns at faster than grandma speeds.  This should be cured when I have my fenders rolled.  Another solution could be stiffer anti-sway bars or a strut tower bar.  Even with the soft springs I have not had problems with speed bumps or steep driveways.

Handling with the kit installed is pretty good.  Even though the body roll is as great or greater than with the stock sport suspension the car definitely sticks better in the corners.  I went on a So Cal Audi Club drive up to Palm Springs today and the car handled quite well in the twisties.  There is too much body roll for my tastes but the car sticks.

If you have a FWD and are looking for a drop greater than something like the Neuspeed sports offer and you do not want to pay for coil-overs, the H&R cup kit might be your solution.  If you want a suspension kit that will eliminate body roll try something else.

If you want a smooth ride, do not throw your car around too much, and do not mind or can fix inner fender rubbing then this kit is for you.
