“The five-cylinder engine has one of the longest traditions within the company and we are continually developing it,” says Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG. “In the Audi RS Q3 performance*, the 2.5 TFSI puts on an impressive show with its tremendous pulling power, enhanced revving ability and characteristic sound. To get us fit for the future, we will be equipping the new Audi TT RS* with a newly developed five-cylinder engine made of aluminum.”
The judges who voted for the Audi engine are all agreed: “There are only a few engines around with such a strong character, but this five-cylinder power unit brings back memories of the unique sound of the Group B rally engine from the 1980s. The 2.5 TFSI from Audi is not just impressive in terms of its superb performance, it also has a high recognition factor. Through this five-cylinder engine, Audi is allowing the 1980s dream to live on.”
The 2.5 TFSI engine is set to be the centerpiece of the RS Q3* and RS 3 Sportback* in addition to the RS Q3 performance. For the new RS performance model, Audi has increased the output of the 2.5 TFSI engine once again: A further enhanced main radiator and an optimized fuel pump have provided an extra 20 kW (27 hp) of power, whilst peak torque has increased from 450 to 465 Nm (331.9 to
343.0 lb-ft). As a result, the top model in the compact high-performance SUV segment can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h(62.1 mph) in 4.4 seconds – 0.4 seconds faster than the RS Q3. Standard top speed is 270 km/h (167.8 mph).
The “International Engine of the Year” award has been presented annually since 1999. An international panel of 65 motorsport journalists elect the best engines of the year in a number of different categories. This is the twelfth time that Audi has won the globally renowned prize.
