  • The love of the open-top car
  • “The sky’s the limit” – convertibles at the Audi museum mobile

Summer, sun and convertibles: when temperatures start to rise, an increasing number of open-top cars can be seen on the roads. It doesn’t matter whether they’re called Spyder, Roadster or Cabriolet – the open-top car is making a comeback. And Audi Tradition is following this trend. Under the motto “The sky’s the limit”, the Audi museum mobile will be exhibiting convertibles from 30 May to 30 September 2006.

Driving with the top down is synonymous with driving pleasure, joie de vivre and relaxation; it is also experiencing the weather and the countryside up close. All convertible drivers, no matter from what era and what class of car, are equally exposed to the weather. And the weather is a central theme in this special exhibition: ten very different open-top cars from the history of Audi are being presented in various weather zones, these being storm, rain and sun. They range from the 1923 Wanderer W 8 Puppchen and the Audi Front 225 to the elegant Horch 830 BL and convertibles from the 1950s and 1960s: a sporty, elegant black two-seater with red interior trim, the DKW F 93 Cabriolet from 1955, a nippy two-seater DKW F 12 Roadster and a unique specimen of the Audi 100 LS Cabriolet from 1969 which never went into series production.

Elaborately designed hoods, clever body concepts and ever-improving safety features ensure that the convertible of today is a car suitable for everyday use. This development is represented by two prototypes, the Audi Cabriolet from 1989 and the Audi TT Roadster from 1999, and the brand-new Audi S4 Cabriolet and Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. The complicated technology of a convertible is illustrated by a cutaway model and the development of the convertible hood by demonstration models. The advantages of the soft top and the new materials in the Audi acoustic hood are also explained. In the lifestyle exhibition area, visitors can then find out about what clothes are suitable to wear when driving a convertible, along with the right kind of headgear and sunglasses so as to thoroughly enjoy the heavenly views of beautiful scenery while driving with the top down.

The four rings of the Audi badge symbolise the brands Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, which were later combined under the umbrella of Auto Union. Auto Union and NSU, which merged in 1969, made many significant contributions towards the development of the car. AUDI AG was formed from Audi NSU Auto Union AG in 1985. Together with the two traditional companies Auto Union GmbH and NSU GmbH, Audi Tradition nurtures and presents the deep and diverse history of Audi. The Audi museum mobile at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt is open from Monday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
