    When and where did you purchase this car?

    June 2006. I bought the car from Momentum Audi in Houston, Texas. I was lucky to find a car matching nearly all my specifications in the lot.

    Why did you choose this car as the basis of your project?

    I prefer small cars, and I’ve always fancied the versatility of a hatchback.

    Was there anything unique about the car before you starting modifying it?

    The simple fact that it’s an Audi hatchback. There’s really nothing else comparable on the market.

    Did you consider any other brands, and what led you to Audi?

    I looked at the Lexus IS250 and Infiniti G35 coupe. The IS250’s tiptronic felt sluggish, and the overall driving experience wasn’t exciting. Despite the nice bump in power, I decided against the G35 since they’re extremely common. The A3, though only 200hp, felt nimble and it’s also quite apparent the DSG isn’t as parasitic as a traditional automatic. Sport mode is so much fun!

    What was your objective with this project?

    My previous project was geared primarily with performance in mind. For the A3, I went a different direction. Basically, I wanted a comfortable, sporty luxury car that hopefully turns some heads along the way. The theme is “bling” for shows, but at the same time keeping it classy and not over-the-top.

    What companies or individuals were involved in the built-out?

    Virtual World Parts, HW Parts Tuning, MJM Autohaus, North American Motorsports, Modena Autowerks, Carrozzeria Design, European Legacy Motors, and Makaveli Forged Wheels.

    Any specific technical details you can share?

    There’s nothing to report since performance hasn’t been addressed as of yet.

    What was the most difficult part of the project to get right?

    The most difficult part of the project is probably the body work, but it’s nothing Modena Autowerks can’t handle. The sideskirts were slightly long, but the shop took care of it by trimming and plastic welding. Also, I had the rear valence painted two-tone similar to an S-Line model.

    If you had to do it all over again what would you change?

    For the most part, everything was planned from the start. I wouldn’t mind having a set of Bi-xenon HIDs from the factory, though.

    Have you generated any formal test results with this car (dyno, 1/4 mile, etc?)
    Not at this time.

    Are you finished – what’s next?

    There are a few things I have in mind, but I like to surprise people. In the near future, I will probably install a set of Euro-spec HIDs (single xenon) – the projector lens is larger and the high-beam is a separate bulb.

    Is this your daily driver, and if not what else is in your garage?

    I also have a tweaked 2000 Jetta 1.8T which was one the first APR Stage 3 cars in Texas back in 2002. It has since been equipped with a GT28RS turbo, larger injectors, O2M 6-speed transmission, full exhaust, custom front-mount intercooler, etc. The car achieved 335hp to the front wheels on the last DynoJet session.

    What is your favorite thing about this car?

    I love the interior – it’s very “driver-centric.” The creature comfort and audio controls are placed well within reach and styling is top notch.

    As modified, what makes your car unique?

    I’d say the wheel choice and bodykit combination set it apart I wasn’t too keen on the design of the Rieger rear valence, but the car looks incomplete without something there The sideskirts extend substantially lower than the car, so I had to make sure whatever valence I chose still followed that line. Oettinger seemed like the perfect match. Few are fond of the OEM chrome front grille. I, on the other hand, chose to compliment it with the addition of inPro mirror covers and high-polished wheels.
