RS e-tron GT vs e-tron Formula E: The Most Shocking Race Ever
Formula 1 legend Nico Rosberg visits Audi’s test track for the ultimate drag race with the RS e-tron GT, a hint of the future to come.
Being first doesn’t always mean being the best. Have a look at Tesla, for one. Sure, they brought electricity to luxury and performance with their cars. Yet, the quality issues, aging lineup, and one man’s ego aren’t good for building the best. Thankfully, Audi took plenty of notes, giving us a much better option: the 2022 RS e-tron and RS e-tron GT.
Though we have to wait a while to drive either model, Formula 1 legend and YouTuber Nico Rosberg got behind the wheel of the RS e-tron GT recently. Not just for any drive, though, but a drag against Audi’s new e-tron Formula E car with 2017 Formula E champ, Lucas Di Grassi.
“Today, I get to try the prototype of the RS e-tron GT,” said Rosberg. “Very, very thrilled to do that. As you know, I love electric cars. I love sustainability. This is the path to that. This is awesome.”
Though he expects the race on Audi’s 1/8-mile track to be close, both cars and the crew must overcome the snow. Luckily, Audi took a page from baseball of all things, covering the paperclip with tarp to keep the track fluff-free. Then again, it’s easier to cover a track that tiny than a massive beast like Daytona.
“I’m about to jump in now,” said Rosberg. “Lucas is already on the starting grid there. They just said to put it in Dynamic […] full on the brake, flat-out on the throttle. When it goes green after the five lights are red, just take the foot off the brake and go.”
And go he and Di Grassi did. On the first launch, the two e-trons took off like rockets. However, the Formula E bested the RS e-tron GT by a car length. After getting his reaction time dialed-in, though, Rosberg pulled past the electric race car, taking the win by half a car.
“Amazing to see how close the e-tron GT got to the Formula E car,” said Rosberg. “It was exciting to drive it. Nice to see the German manufacturers […] are really ramping it up with EVs, and doing a fantastic job. I think it’s important for mobility, for becoming more sustainable.”
And of course, it’ll be nice to roll past the competition in an RS e-tron GT, too. Especially those representing one man’s ego.
