Default Cam alignment tool

I need to replace the lifters on the drivers side. I have the manual, I have validated TDC. The question is with the cam alignment tool. If I have to remove the cam, and the cam sprocket, how does this tool keep alignment? I am sure I am missing something.
Any pictures or videos on this procedure?
Thank you

Set the engine to TDC on the front crank pulley and install the cam tool. The tool may not go on if the timing belt is stretched or the timing tool was not used in the past. I have attached a repair guide from the Bentley. The cam tool will set the camshafts to the correct position for TDC. The cam toothed wheels float. Note the position of the camshaft notches on the nose and lobes when you take it apart. You will need a gear puller to remove the camshaft toothed wheel. Audi say use a Kukko 20/10 puller. I used and You can use this puller kit from eBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Pull....c100005.m1851
