I am still trying to sort out my gas mileage.
I once did a 1000 km long distance driving on gas where it returned 25 mpg (9.4 L/100 km). Since then I've only run LPG where she returns 19.6 mpg (12 L/100 km). (Side note: Up to 20 % increase on LPG is normal.) My car is a 2.6 fwd automatic.
This became interesting as I picked up an almost identical parts car and drove it for 14 hours to get it home. She was a 2.6 fwd 5-speed manual. The car was neglected with a very dirty engine bay, a terrifying exhaust drone, and I discover later that it had no air filter in!
Finally having a stick shift in this kind of vehicle I was happy to try some hypermiling technique. The first 500 km were low speed limit (50 mph) and by using pulse'n glide technique and shifting to neutral in downhills etc. I estimated aprox. 40 mpg!! (5.9 L/100 km). By this time I had contacted the seller to verify if the fuel gauge were known to be accurate or not, as I was afraid to run her empty. A very big exhaust leak at the front pipe gave me motivation to shift her to neutral as often as possible.
The second part of the trip involved 200 km of highway driving at ~80 mph. When I reached my destination I had filled 75 litres in the tank, clocked 1050 kms. Looking at the needle I estimate to have burned 73 litres. That equals ~34 mpg (6.95 L/100 km) over 1050 kms. (650 miles.)

I'm alternating between driving my 1996 A4 (264K miles) and '05 A4. My wife wants me to sell the '96, but I'm keeping it at least until I get the control arms done on the newer one. That 3.0 motor with four variable cams is sure more potent than the old SOHC 2.8, and the car is full of cool features that makes the '96 seem almost antique. However, the '96 is at least as good if not better in some respects, such as steering effort, visibility, cruising smoothness, and even more comments on how good it looks.
