I think you guys will think I'm crazy, but I think I'm going to stay with my '97 A4 12V.
I have an order for a 2004 S4... but with this rough economy and the fact that my contract expires in February, I don't feel comfortable taking-on a $55,000 car (with tax/license, Gas Guzzler's tax) and $1000+ a month payments.
Besides, my A4 is running great... even with 151K miles! And UrS4's mods really made a surprising difference in performance.
If I don't get the S4, I plan on freshening-up the motor in 15K miles with new pistons, connnecting rods, ARP rod bolts, TDL big-valve heads, ported intake and exhaust manifolds and the rest of UrS4's mods. I figure the 12V A4's are around 3300 pounds and with the above mods, I hope to get 240 - 250 horsepower (more would be better!). That should provide pretty sprightly performance I'm thinking...
So... am I nuts?

I feel for you. Get a B6 3.0 6spd. I think you would like that. If you get a used '02 you get the
extra warranty added on to it. That's what I did (traded in my 97 2.8 5spd).

Re: No, you arent...
Finally, u r a man who has done his homework :-)
Maybe u can see in a year, that u had enough money to buy the S4, then i think u saved ( i hope so :-) ) a little bit of your money.
But if u order the S4, and u cant afford it, u have no 12v and no S4 any longer ( and no money - hr hr hr ).
So i think your decision was right!!!
BTW, im planing to upgrade the 12v with a Turbo in near future. As i told, i own an S2 Coupe ( 20v Turbo ), but here in Europe r so many modified Turbo-Audis, so it would something special if its stock
But a Turbo 12v would be a "never done before" car ( in europe ). It would be to expensive and maybe wont bring the wanted gain of horsepower.
So first of all, lets tune up the 12v without Turbo :-))

I am so S - M - R -T .... one of my favorites...
But I still think that the best one was the whole line about moe saying "I can flash fry a buffalo in 7 seconds" to which homer replie "but I want it now"
Kills me everytime!!
