Default Shopping for Oil Filters

I'm looking for oil filters for my 1996 A4Q and I found a website that offers 3 different brand filters (Mann, Bosch, Mahle), ranging from $7.95 to $10.95. In the listing for each of those brands, this text appears:

"Due to the dimentional length of this Mahle filter, this filter is only applicable to Audi 6 cylinder(AFC/AHA) engines through 1998."

Is it safe to assume that these are all the same filter, with the same characteristics as the Mann W 930/21?

Thanks

Default Why is everybody concerned with length? :-P

To compare specs, see the filter manufacturer's websites or call their tech department.

Mann+Hummel, Mahle, and Hengst make very good filters. The differences in quality should be negligible. Just make sure you get the equivalent to the 078-115-561-J filter, for example a Mann W930/21.

Default Bosch and Mann jointly purchased Purolator

(All or some?) US-made Bosch filters used to be identical to Champion Labs filters. Now they are probably Purolators. I would buy Bosch filters that are made in Germany, if I were to buy Bosch filters.

Mobil M1 filters use very good filter medium. Make sure the bypass valve spec is correct, though. I don't think the filter cross-reference brochures at PepBoys, Kragen etc can be trusted.

Default Because they filter TOO much and become plugged, allowing oil to bypass the loosy closure end...

Do a search and you'll find lots of info about how bad Fram oil filters are, and why you shouldn't use them.

Default Actually, the cardboard end cap can come loose and clog the filter

Hence the nickname Orange Death.

Not all Frams are made poorly. Filter designs varies consideably between models. They actually make some decent cartridge filters. For our Audis, a Fram is not on my list of good choices.
