Angry DO I REALLY HAVE TO REPLACE ENTIRE TURBO UNIT OVER FAULTY WASTEGATE VALVE??!

Really could use some help here.

Original owner. Dreaded check engine light comes on. Was 1st told by reputable dealership that it was the turbo recirculating valve. Replaced only to have light come back on the next day. They then tell me it's fault code P0299 (negative pressure deviation of turbo). They explained the culprit was the waste gate valve. HOWEVER, the valve by itself could not be replaced but that THE ENTIRE TURBO UNIT needs to be replaced...😦😕..ARE YOU KIDDING ME??! Is this true?!

In addition, same dealership replaced the turbo previously in 2011. That time, they found a 'loose wastegate rod' which the tech had deemed the turbo needed to be replaced. Mind you this was under warranty so no big but to replace 2 turbos in 6 years over the same issue?! I can't be the only one going through this.

Did some research and found a few aftermarket sights selling OEM N75 (06F906283F) for $40-$45. Am I to assume that if you can buy an OEM part, can't it be replaced by a competent mechanic?? Am I being hoodwinked here?

Anyone with experience in this and if they have any suggestions, I can't fathom having to pay $2.5k for another turbo. Much appreciated

Just for comparison, my 1.8 turbo Jetta (Audi engine) is 15 years old, the only thing I changed was the, t-belt, plugs, oil, and filters. I'm the original owner also, these engines rock as far as I've witnessed. Good luck with your choice, but I'd pick the cheapest culprit first, and work your way to the pricier items last.

The TDI people found similar. They were told the waste gate actuator could only be replaced with the turbo, not as a separate component. They ultimately found a source so that actuator could be replaced when it rotted out saving the owner tons of $$$.
