How is the timing chain involved when replacing a crank seal

You talking about the front seal. The thing about it is, The pulley, and the sprockets for the timing chains are held by that center bolt. It is possible for the sprockets to come off and timing would jump and according the the book, says the engine can be destroyed from this happening!
Personally I have had 4 of these apart, none of them had this happen. On the ones I was doing chain on, I could see just how small the little "shelf" is that is passively holding them there without the bolt. What I do to be safe, is remove the upper cover, run the engine to the mark so the cams marks are pointed up. Then remove the bolt holding the pulley, and slowly and carefully remove the pulley, then I put something like a socket, or piece of plastic pipe and carefully thread the bolt back in and hand tighten it so it holds the timing sprockets safe. Then do your seal.
