2.7 longevity- How many miles without problems??
I'm all over the map trying to decide what Audi might work for me. I have a 96 A-6Q with 180k- time to start thinking. EVERY model appeals to me but I gotta get real! I can't spend much over 20k (probably shouldnt spend that much). I need Quattro, I need some quickness (I'm a 58 yo kid) and I commute like 55 miles total/day. A A-4 with the 1.8 manual miught be the ticket but I feel like it may not last into the high miles area. I'm also wondering the same about the 2.7 An older A-6 even with a 4.2 might be doable- I do a lot of my own work- anyway I just thouight I'd post the question on each engine forum- someone else did on the 4.2 and that engine is suprisingly economical and durable. I would imagine a 3.0 is also- I don't know about the 2.7 turbo or the 1.8- comments?? longevity stories??

This might be a better question to ask in the B5S4 forum but...
There are a few people with high mileage on the 2.7t. The motor itself looks like it will last forever, but the turbos seem to be a weak link.
I've only put about 10k miles on mine so far (It's at 42k right now), so I'm not really qualified to answer this question, but I haven't had any engine problems (or any other major problems either, just nit-picky stuff).

I'm creeping up to 90k....
I feel that the engine is good but the turbo's are a weak spot. I was lucky enough to run my factory turbo's to 80k which I think is good. Not for the wallet though! There are a lot of consistant problems w/ the A6....most are easy fixes TBB, F-hose, tie rods, CV boots, etc. however in some cases big $$$ is required. To replace blown turbo engine has to be pulled, this is bad! PITA. A6 Search forum is a big help for diagnosing problems. All in all the car is great, it has been costly but worth it. I'm going for 200k.

Ditto! Not sure Ward's 10 Best means much but I was under the impression...
the engine internals were bullet proof? Peripheral issues such as plumbing seem to be the source of a lot of problems. For example, the clogged breather pipe syndrome as the reason for a lot of expensive leak type repairs.

Ric 601:
Somewhere below, I saw someone summarize it just right. The 2.7t engine, which might give you the best balance of variety/price/performance from which to choose, is a mixed bag.
The engine itself is pretty strong, from whatever I've seen, heard and read. (yea, I own onw 75k and perfect). On the other hand, the turbos are a worry. They do fail, like all turbos, but worse, they must be replaced in pairs an require engine removal. Very pricey, like $4k-5k I hear.
My guess is that if a) you dont race, b) you use synthetic, and c) you warm up and cool down religiously, they're good for 150k+ miles. Porblem is, when you buy a used car, you have no idea how its been maintained, and most maintenance isn't pretty. So..... the normally aspirated cars are solid, and the turbo cars need either confidence in past maintenance, a logn warranty, or a price that allows you to do the maint when (not if) they blow.
That's my $0.02
