My 2000 A6 had 39000 when I bought before 49000k It needed a throttle body (no not just the boot)and a pedal actuator both CEL and EPC lights were on and off and on all the time. Great car anyway traded for a 2001.5 S4 Don't be too concerned you run risk with any used car.

I have a 00' a6 with 2.7, and I have about...95000 miles now, and I bought it in july of last year. since I had to replace the passenger side CV joint, and since they dont make a complete Driver side CV joint, I just replaced the half-joint. I also need a new MAF sensor, and my hoses were bad so I replaced them with new ones. I replaced the brakes and new drill/slot rotors all the way around. So I have spent nearly.....2500 dollars so far in repairs, but like I said I have a lot of miles, but my car drives like a dream now, if you take care of it, then it will take care of you.
