A6 Automatic Transmission Pressure

A6 Automatic Transmission Pressure
Had the misfortune of losing the trans fluid on my stock 2000 A6 2.7T Quattro with 112,000 miles. Had it flat bedded to a shop thinking a line had burst and they could repair the leak and refill the fluid. I was surprised when the mechanic reported that the pressure in the transmission got too high at highway speeds and was forcing the fluid out of one of the main seals. He suggested that it would be more cost effective to simply replace the transmission rather than try to find the cause of the high pressure condition. Right now I'm looking at $2700 for a used transmission plus labor costs (dealer rebuilt cost is even more outrageous). Has anyone out there had a similar experience, or care to speculate on what's happening with this?
Thanks!

I assume tip tranny. Call one of the ZF Distributors/Rebuilders and talk to them. I've had some
excellent conversations with a place in Michigan. I would not have the dealer mess with my wounded tranny - get a rebuilt one with a warranty vs a used one with an unknown history if you are planning on keeping the car for any length of time. My opinion on these cars is that the labor is so high, that it is foolish to save $ by buying used or cheap parts when the labor is typically more than the parts. Your dealer should be able to deal directly with the rebuilder, who is factory authorized. These tip trannys are quite complex units and I would want it done right for my car.
If you're 6spd, then please let us know what the hell happened as I would be shocked to hear this was the case w/ a manual.

Minor Hijack -- looking for opinions on when transfluid should be replaced?
My '02 Tip has 44K on the clock, shifts fine, but these cars have bad torque converter histories. Also, would my Indy do this or should I go to a trans specialist?

honestly, I had a rebuilt tranny in my '90 V8q and I changed it out every year, even though
it was Mobil 1 synthetic. However, that was at a clip of 30k miles a year, give or take. My personal opinion is 50k or 100k changes. In fact, it's really a good idea to change it every time you do a timing belt change, since it's in the air anyway.
your indy should do just fine. just make sure he's done at least one before.
