Default Alternator hard to replace?

I own a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T and I need my alternator replaced. The dealer is charging me $1400 and I wanted to know if changing the alternator is something I can do myself to save some money. Does anyone have any knowledge in replacing the alternator?

Default not much A6 help, but on an S4, there are 3 ways to attack this.

1. remove front clip and radiator and accessory belt and unbolt the alternator and replace it. definite PITA.

2. could possibly remove just the front clip and the RF intercooler and may be able to get it out of there.

3. remove the bits from underneath that you need to get to remove the regulator/brushes and replace them. dealer only part. PITA as well, but for me, was easier than #1.
