Default Autozone - VAGOM (1999 A6)

I wanted to take my A6 to Autozone to run the VAGCOM since my ABS and Brake Light (flashing) comes on every other day. I searched the forum and decided I needed to determine what the fault codes are, however Autozone informed me that they can only do this if the Check Engine Light is on. Is this true? (I'm new to this)
Thanks.

Default that dude is full of crap. they can pull the codes, but you'll have to translate them.

good time to buy a VAG-COM

Okay, thanks. I think I'll try another Autozone then!

Default I have a generic OBD II code reader. You can have a code set w/o the CEL on, as my S4 had one w/o

the CEL being on - it was for random multiple misfires. The deal is, these generic code readers will only give the universal OBD II codes, not the manufacturere specific codes. So if you have a code thrown that isn't part of the universal OBD II codes, you will need a VAG-COM or Audi/VW specific diagnostic tool. It only takes like 2 minutes to read the codes, so it's worth a shot with an AZ reader.

Part of the reason he wouldn't bother is that anything to do with the ABS system on an Audi, he wouldn't have any of the parts - so he would have nothing to gain by pulling those codes. With a CEL, they could at least try to sell you sparkplugs or an O2 sensor.

Default I dont think that their readers can connect to any controllers other than the ECU

And even then, it can only read the generic obd-II crap.

Sounds nasty, but at least no infection. That would be the worst.
