B5 S4 Starter Replacement
can anybody give me any advice about replacing my starter?
Is it located under the engine block on the passenger side? What do I have to remove to access it? Does anyone know where I can get instructions or information on this replacement. Any information helps, thanks. |
yes, located under engine block on passenger side
I know you can replace the alternator by removing the front clip and the passenger IC, but I'm guessing you'll have to remove the radiator to get to the starter, as it's behind the alternator I'm sure the Bentley manual will have detailed instructions |
I STARTED TAKING APART THE FRONT END TO SEARCH FOR THE STARTER.. AFTER TAKING OFF THE RADIATOR AND A FEW OTHER FRONT END COMPONENTS I FOUND THE ALTERNATOR. THE STARTER WAS LOCATED JUST BEHIND THAT...
I AM NOT SURE HOW TO GET THE STARTER OUT. I HAVEN'T REALLY TRIED TO HARD YET, BUT FROM FIRST GLANCE IT SEEMS LIKE THE ENGINE MOUNT IS IN THE WAY. IF ANY ONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS THAT WOULD BE GREAT. |

HERE IS A PICTURE OF THE FRONT END OF MY CAR TAKEN APART, I LABELED WHERE THE ALTERNATOR USED TO BE AND PUT A BOX AROUND THE STARTER.
THE SECOND PICTURE IS A CLOSE UP OF THE STARTER... |
Hi Just wondering how the starter removal went? I'm getting ready to yank mine out this weekend and have it tested. TIA.

here are the sources on how to replace your starter, if you also want to replace it you can visit this starter website online

Hi, were you able to remove the starter? I'm having the same issues with my all road.

There is a bolt from the back side on top of the starter and one from the front on the lower side. the engine mount can stay but you will have to take off the lower turbo piping that leads to the intercooler. I can tell you it's not an easy process but that should give you more room to work. There is a little locator on the upper mount once the starter is free of that it should come out pretty easily as it has a large taper on the gear side of it.

JUST replaced the starter on my '01 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 liter 5 speed. Not as bad as it seems. I merely removed the 4 bolts holding the anti-sway bar, and it fell out of the hole. No worries. Took a bit of finagling, but the old one came out, and the new one went right back in the hole where the old one came from.
Only needed a 17mm Socket, 1 x 3 inch extension, 1 swivel and 1 x 6 inch extension. Plus 1 17mm wrench. There was a need for a 13mm to get the sway bar off. |
