cam seals w/o ruining valves
I'm posting this in the engine forum as well.
So, Any one know how I can change cam seals without the fear of having a cam turn and do valve damage? It obviously can't be done with the cam holding tool or cam gears on...I R Scared
This is on a 2.7T
Thanks for the help

You MAY be able to do it by pulling the sprocket and then just loosening the end caps on the cams 1 at a time, but the chances of turning a cam while removing the sprocket are pretty good. You really should have the cam locking bar for this - then you can reset the timing the way it should be. If you set the engine to TDC, put the pin in, and then remove the sprockets, when you put it all back together, you use the bar to line everything back up when you put it back...

good tips. thats what i was originally going to do, but i worried about one, of not both, of the cams "popping off of a lobe" and jamming a valve into a piston. i ended up popping the gears off of the cams, removing the bolts, then the crank holding tool. then i rotated the crank about 20degrees. this should bring the two pistons that were at the top of their stroke down a bit without putting any other pistons all the way up. now, no worries about valve damage. obviously the reverse to finish the timing belt job. turns out the cams never moved anyway. Thanks to Mike at International AutoHaus for the help. he's been working on my stuff for years!
