Default Cam Sensor and Cat Questions

I have a 01 A6 2.7t and the cam sensor is throwing intermittent CEL codes. I can acquire a used one for like 40 bucks and I am wondering how hard it is to put this part in and if anyone has and information/ diagrams on how to replace it.

Also I am wondering if anyone has ever punched/gutted their cats on this same car. I have one that is rattling and my audi mechanic told me that it needs to be rplaced but I figured gutting would be a fix to the problem. i am wondering if anyone has done this before what is the exact procedure, are there any advantages/disadvantages or anything else I should know about this. I would much rather buy an aftermarket exhaust but I am a broke college student.

what codes are you getting? For gutting the cats search for 'DIY piggie' on the B5 S4 forum.

It showed an intermittent camshaft sensor code. The exact code number I am unsure of as my audi mechanic threw it on his vag he showed me what popped up and it said that the camshaft sensor was fouled out with a short and that it was throwing cat faults as well but that could be attributed to the half broken cat I have.

Default intermittent might not mean the sensor is bad.

usually, when the fail, they short to ground.

as for the cat, how much work have you done on your car? doing downpipes yourself is a serious undertaking.

I have not done much to this car as I have only had it for about a month. I am gathering the rest of the materials needed to do a darinintake and I wanted to punch out of the cats to add to the intake and also fix the half broken cat as well. I noticed that none of the forums that I have read have any info about punching out the actual cat just the precat leading to it. Is there any way to punch out the actual cat as well or would it require cutting it out and then welding it back on? As far as working on cars i have helped pull motors out and worked on many cars before just not this one.

Default for the cat, I'd guess it's probably safer to remove the cat and put in a straight pipe.

have you replaced the sensor yet? have you ohmed out the existing sensor?

No not yet. Does anyone have a diagram of the sensor or where it is located on the motor. I havent taken a look yet as I may be able to figure it out on my own but pictures never hurt. As far as the cat I will need to find some piping to replace the cats and also someone to weld it back together. Do i need anything specific or can I just replace the cats with stright pipe the same size as the rest of the exhaust piping?

Also how do I ohm out the existing sensor? Just take it out and hoow it up to a voltmeter to test if there is a complete circuit?
