Cam tensioner reoccuring problem dealer can't replicate
I have an 03 allroad that had 49970 when I dropped it off at the dealer about a month ago. The problem is that a cam tensioner that they had just replaced threw a code and makes noise intermittently. Through normal driving in the four days that I had the car since they replaced the tensioner I had a situation at start up where the car would idle very rough accompanied by loud rattling/tapping from the engine. This happened twice, one time being the same day I picked the car up. Once you goose the throttle the engine will snap into a smooth idle and sound perfect. Before the second time that this happened at start up, the car began to surge under heavy acceleration and threw a code indicating an error with the cam timing on the bank that they serviced. I have a video tape of the symptoms but the dealer still acts as if the car is perfect even though it threw a code. They said that I can pick the car up but since I am out of warranty as soon as I drive it off the lot I won't. They say that it is documented and if something happens at a later time it would be covered but when I asked if the valves get trashed because the chain skips a tooth they said that they couldn't promise that THAT would be covered. I am basically sick of waiting and think the tape and code should be enough for them to take another look at the tensioner components and replace anything out of spec rather than trash the motor when something fails all the way. Do I need to get AoA involved, if so does anyone know how I would go about it?
Thanks,
Ryan

yes you should be calling AoA..
You should also post this on the allroad forum. As some of us may have additonal insights to the problem.
Its very possible that when they did the cam tensioner, they did not hold the alignement of the cams correctly and the belt is off 1 or two teeth as you said. The timing sensors are able to adjust spark timing but certainly not enough for 100% smooth ride.
It is entirely possible the dealer already trashed a valve and It needs to be checked.
FYI, the 2.7T is a timing belt, not a chain.

Here is part of the issue - AoA won't pay the dealer to do the repair again, so the dealer will have
to eat this one to fix it and obviously they don't want to do that for you. Contact AoA, but I would also suggest contacting the dealer general manager. The way AoA does warranty reimbursement, taking it to another dealer wight away won't do any good either as that dealer will not get paid by AoA to fix another dealer's botched repair work.
BBB may be your next step if the AoA and GM contacts do not produce satisfaction. I've had a bit of experience in that arena with my dealer. Be polite but firm and clearly state what you want, which is the repair done correctly - regardless of what it costs or how much time it takes.

Dude, are you seriously bustin ***** over this? Yes a 2.7t has a timing belt but I am not talking
about the timing belt. There are CAM CHAINS that connect the intake and exhaust cams on each cylinder bank. On the 2.7t the timing BELT drives ONE of the cams in each head. The other cam is driven from the CAM CHAIN which is connected to the cam that is driven by the TIMING BELT. In between is a hydralic cam tensioner which assists with VVT as well as keeps one set of valves from bouncing off of pistons. Thanks for the help but please don't point out that the V8 has a timing chain to me again. I am well aware.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/600761.phtml">This post has some great pics of a CAM CHAIN on a 2.7t</a></li></ul>

Well, thanks to an email from Scott, I tore down the front of the car to check my TB tensioner and

Idler pulley and lo and behold both were covered in red dust indicative of bearing failure. The tensoiner actually had melted rubber from the backside of the belt behind it. The dealer claims to have removed and inspected the timing belt on the first visit. I have a hard time believing they did that. Both parts were literally covered in rust and dust as well as the inside of the cover. I have pics and I will try to post them.
