Coil Problem or ICM Problem?
Hello guys I'm trying to diagnose a problem with a misfire and want to know if I should replace a coil pack or the ICM.
Vag Com Codes 16684 Multiple Cylinder Misfire Dedectet P0300 - 35-00 - - 16689 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected P0305 - 35-00 - - 16686 Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected P0302 - 35-00 - - Here is what I have done, I removed all DTC's and it had the exact same codes pop up immediately each time thereafter. The car runs terribly, no power at all. Then I moved the #2 coil I believe (drivers side bank center cylinder) to the #3 cylinder I believe (drivers side bank rear cylinder) and the trouble code followed the coil. When I moved the coils back to original positions the codes again followed the coil. I've also replaced all the spark plugs of course started with taht. |
Forgot to mention, 01 Audi A6 2.7t Manual

If the code follows the one ignition coil that you have moved, replace it. The driver side center cylinder is #5, not #2. You moved it to #6, not #3, so it's kind of weird that the fault moved with the coil from #2 to #3.
There is also a possibility that there is more than one ignition coil that is bad. There is no law that two cannot be bad at the same time. Use a magic marker to identify which ones you know to be bad, or you will find yourself putting bad ones back in the car. |

I find the factory coils to be pretty good, and keep a couple in the rear cubby of the trunk. I typically spend about $20 (check ebay) for used ones, test them immediately on receipt, mark them as good and have them handy. I have two coils and one icm in each of my 2.7Ts at this point. I also carry my laptop and my vcds cable with me on long trips... Nothing would irritate me more than having to spend a fortune for a diagnosis or new ignition part while in another state.
