High pitch engine noise (sorry for redunant question still a bit confused),
My car: 2003 A6 2.7T, 90,000 miles
Question: From time to time I hear a very loud high pitched whine coming from the (Fan?). I'mnot sure if it is the fan, but I've listened closely and it definately coming from the same area in the front of the engine. It doesn;t happen all the time About twice a week), but when it does it begins as soon as I start the car and shuts off (whines down) once I shut the car off. I recently topped off the Coolant level with hopes that it might fix something...No such luck!
I was told it might be my "backup fan?"
Does this sound normal?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

you have two fans. stick your finger between the blades to see if either are running
when you shut the car off. if not, then it's not the fans.
how long does the whine last? Maybe a belt is squeaking?

Might be belts squeaking, especially if it is temp related, ask you neighbours, they will tell you
what they think your sound is.
P.S. don't put you fingers between the blades to see if the fans are running...

Thanks for the safety tip
This may be a perochial question, but is there a way for me to figure out if the belt is running correctly? Again, it sounds like the noise is coming oput of the fan somewhere. The noise is also loud and sounds a bit like a distant police siren. Thanks again.

Look for an unusual wear on the edges of the serpentine belt - and you can always spray some WD-40
on the belt itself to rule out that it's the belt (if the spray reduces the noise, even for a little while then it's the belt - spray the smooth side 1st, then wait a few minutes and spray the ribbed side). Distant police siren noise is what turbos sound like. Good luck.

That was in response to the "don't put your finger in the fan to see if its still running" comment..
If someone actually thought this was a serious suggestion and tried that, then my statement applies. Figured just about everyone was smarter than to take such "advice" literally.
