Loud whine when steering?? help a Noob....
Especially when it freezing cold. Figured maybe some "lack" of proper fluids? It the steering power assisted R&P. I'm no genius but I don't see a power steering pump or reservoir. Thoughts?

Good thing my wife can't drive a stick....the fluid is....
Hydualic fluid?? A central system? I notice when I open the hood the only dipstick besides me is the oil stick. Reservoir with the green cap is the hydraulic fluid reservoir?? (for the clutch, p/s, and other functions). Is that correct, or am I way off as usual?

the fluid is not available at most auto parts stores. it's really just a
mineral oil, but it's known by other names such as pentosin and can be found at some euro parts stores or the dealership.
the p/s fluid reservoir is, if you're standing in front of the car, in the lower right corner. definitely green cap.

The Power steering reservoir serves only the steering to drain you will want to disconnect the hose where it attaches to the cooler. It is an involved procedure to refill. Fill and run the engine for a few seconds without sucking air, refill and repeat as many times as necessary. Do not turn wheel during procedure. If you have allowed the system to get low and air has entered it will make some very bad sounds. If you aerate the hydraulic fluid, your screwed, until the air comes out. Mine is quiet know that the aeration is gone.

=) Green cap is power steering fluid ONLY. Clutch uses brake fluid from master cyl resr (yellow
cap). Pentosin CHF 11S is the type of hydraulic fluid to use if you buy at someplace other than Audi/VW dealer. There is an Audi spec number, but can't recall for sure - maybe G 002? (My bottle from Audi calls it 11S type hydraulic fluid, so it is obviously repackaged Pentosin).

Thanks, for the helpful info. Car's going into the shop for an oil change and some other routine maintenance, I'll get the fluid changed while its there.
