Need cats... Can I replace with downpipes?

OK, I blew out the turbos on my '01 S4 tiptronic. My extended warranty replaced the turbos, but not the cats. Dealer wants $3,000 for the cats.
I am told I can replace the whole system with downpipes at a fraction of the cost, and I will not have to pass emissions testing, because they do not actually test exhaust on cars newer than 1996.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!

which cats were they replacing? all of them? if you purchase downpipes, they

should include cats, and yes, even with labor, it's cheaper than that. In fact, they'll be better b/c they are larger and flow more exhaust.

as far as emissions, local laws prevail and yes, they can test any car they want.

Yes. They've invited me to call, but did not leave a number.
My dream would be to find a tuner who has a set he took off a car he was modding, and is keeping them in a pile somewhere... although the tiptronic version is hard to come by. Do you know if the 6sp version can be modified to fit?

quickaudi:STFA 01-10-2007 04:07 PM

doubt it'd be worth it to modify them, and I'm not sure what the difference is anyway.

doubt you'll find many aftermarket downpipes just sitting around...

Look into EPA laws on the Cats, they may have to be warrantied

Paulroad has postedon this topic on the allroad forum. I am not sure of the particulars.

Not true about cars newer than 1996...

The only cars that are exempt are older than late 60's and newer than 2004, at least in California, and Im pretty sure the laws are the same federally. However, you can find downpipes with high flow cats from a few companies. Yours is the C5 right, look into the "piggie pipes" from Vastperformance.com. Those cats will still pass federal emissions laws.
