Are the newer versions of the 2.7t engine more "robust"

It would seem that the engine in my recently pruchased 2000 S4 went boom at 39k miles. Since it was a CPO car, I am not worried, warranty to the rescue, but what will they replace it with? The newest current version of the same engine, or a "vintage" design originally fitted to the vehicle?

Help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Jerry D

"boom" care to be more specific?

the 2.7 is a pretty tough motors. its problems are more related to oil leaks and k03 woes.

This is what I mean by "boom"

Did you get the cause of the boom?

The engines are the same since..Boom can be from a bad timing belt or a simple defect in a machined part. Its not indicative of the entire line.

All current day Audi engine have cam seal leeks and similar. You will find more vocal a group on Audworld in general than the rest of the owners.

that's an over rev failure caused by a high RPM downshift

Is that what it is? Strange then that the situation was not at all like that.

My dealer still doesn't know what cause this.

Looks like the evidence of detonation

Or pinging. It only takes one good detonation to melt the aluminum piston. That's what it looks like on an aircraft engine.

The cause of the engine destruction has yet to be discovered

Pinging or knocking was never brough up, I only use 94 octane fuel in my car, it was stock so I can't see how that would have happened (unless I got a bad batch of gas)

My dealer suspects, that the engine backfired when the No.2 sparkplug blew out of the engine, this cause the No.6 piston to make contact with the Valves, and the rest is history.

New engine is running great.

That looks more like.......

something came loose inside and beat the crap out of everything. Most times detonation will burn a hole or melt the side of the piston in the ring-land area but will rarely beat the piss out of it like that, especially when the one in the next cyl looks pristine. I wouls venture to say that it had some valvetrain parts for lunch.
