Default Passenger side turbo (blown seal?)

On my 2000 A6 2.7T the passenger side turbo has an oil leak/blown seal I'm guessing. I haven't worked much on my A6, Audi seems to be quite the tedious car to work on, lol. I have a lot of experience with older cars, but they are much easier to work on. Do I have to drop the engine in order to get at the turbo? That's what I've heard...Is this something that can only be done at a shop for the most part? There's oil around the turbo and smoke coming out of the exhaust. The engine still runs smooth and no noise coming from the turbo itself. Any info will be much appreciated! Many of you sound like working on your Audi is quite the hobby for most of you. A lot of experience and knowledge in your guys' heads. I'd appreciate any suggestions and methods that I will have to use to try to do this on my own, my wife and I can't really afford sending in this car for this repair right now. Thanks guys!!

Default Sounds like turbo going south to me... You can DIY, long job - pull engine & tranny together.

For some reason, it always ends up that you break something that needs to be ordered in, etc, so plan for longer than a weekend job - aside from that, one day out, one day in...

I would recommend a Bentley repair manual to help things along. However, the manual says to leave tranny and pull engine. I would pull engine and tranny together (drop them both out the bottom unless you have a cherry picker / engine hoist). Engine module & loom comes out with the engine, so all of the sensors, etc. stay attached to the engine.

Many recommend the K04 upgrades, but they aren't exactly budget friendly.

Where are you located?

Default yes, engine has to be removed. you'll need an engine hoist.

you sure that the turbo is blown? i've heard of cam seals and valve cover gaskets leaking oil into the exhaust and causing that kind of problem. Outside shot, anyway.

Default Not a weekend job plan on 40 hours with a hoist, get Bently.

You will run into obstacles, you will have questions don't attempt if don't have patience and time. Not difficult, time consuming.

Good call, double check. My 01 A6 2.7T w/ 60K had valve cover / cam seals leaking down back of head to exhaust running onto center section. At first glance looked turbo realated...NOT SO...
