Secondary Air Pump...
Audi dealership is telling me that my secondary air pump needs to be replaced, becasue they cant pass inspection without turning off the check engine light. Is this an easy job? How much?

Search for Secondary Air Injection SAI pump rebuild on here, usually it's the bearings, and they're cheap and easy to replace, ~$20 or so. There's a nice writeup with the part number for the bearings.
I think the new pumps are about $300 or so. Mine was making a terrible racket, so I pulled it out, swapped the bearings and put it back in. Much better, and it's still working fine, 8 months and 15,000 miles later.

the hi pitched whining on my 2000 A6 went on for about 6 months and then the unit stopped working and threw a code. I bought a used one from a parts yard. my medchanic installed it when he was doing some other workbut its fairly easy to get at.
