Service Engine Light

Service Engine Light
My 1999 A6 is at 89k miles and the service engine light just came on. What gives?
I did have the car running idle for an extended period at the airport last night (45 minutes) shortly after the service engine light came on. Any ideas?

Is it a CEL (yellow symbol on the face of the instruments) or is it a "Service Engine" message when
you start the car? Message can be reset via one of the two ***** on the instrument panel; the CEL yellow symbol needs to be reset w/ engine diagnostic computer (VAGCOM) in most cases (loose gas cap is an exception - but it will take several cycles to reset itself in that case).

Yes, It's the CEL (yellow symbol). As an FYI, how do you reset the
Service Engine message you get when you start the car? I had that and then they reset it when I got the oil change - but I'd like to know how to reset it myself.
Thanks for the info on the vagcom. I don't necessarily have to go to the dealership for this, correct?

a CEL is different from a service engine message. your CEL means something
was deemed wrong by the ECU and it left information about it. You should be able to take your car to any Advance/Autozone to have them scan your stored codes. Post the codes here.
