Smelly car? Burning oil smell?

I have an 2001 S4 Avant that I just bought and it started smelling like burning oil when its warming up. I have heard it hase a cam shaft seal that might need replaced any advise? Is this a at home do it yourself project for someone who is some-what skilled mechanically?

2nd most asked ? on the forums. Need to STFA on B5 S4 or others like C5 A6. It is a PITA, but if

you follow the tricks it can be DIY.

I have an 02 S4 sedan and I get the same thing. Notice it more when using the heater. No evidence of oil in the garage where I park.

Maybe try stopping into a couple of the local independent garages who specialize in VW/Audi or German cars and speak to them to see if they have experience with the issue or know of a shop that specializes in AC work? I am not sure retail auto parts stores would be the best source of a repair specialist.

Engine oil is dripping off the back of the head(s) and or valve cover gaskets and landing on the exhaust manifolds and this is where burning oil smell comes from.

Classic sign engine needs a top end reseal which is Valve Cover Gaskets and Cam Adjuster Gaskets and ideally do a Timing Belt Job at the same time in order to replace all Camshaft Seals including the ones behind the two front cam gears, since the timing belt needs to come off in order to do a complete top end reseal.
