Turbos sending me to the Dentists, The first sign of turbo failure?

Turbos sending me to the Dentists, The first sign of turbo failure?
Over the last couple of days I have begun to hear what is think is the dreaded dentists drill sound form by turbos when I step on the accelerator and the engine revs go between 2500 and around 3000 (I dont know if the sound continues above 3000 but I suspect it would).

From what I research I have done its in this rev range that the turbos are working and therefor on boost. Also that the dentist drill sound (a high pitch wine/rattle) is the first sign of the Turbos being on their way out.

Can anyone confirm this and if this is the case how long after the dreaded dentist drill sound appears do the turbos tend to last?
Many Thanks
James

I have a stock 2000 S4 2.7L BiTurbo. 79,500miles. Owened since Last October.

My turbos are beginning to show signs of failure also (according to tech opinion that is) I have smoke at cold idle after start, but only if i let the car idle for a few minutes. Can be whiteish and billowy to blueish and thinner. Tech says its oil smell that tells him the turbo oil carriage lines must be leaking. i have that turbo drill sound, but i only notice it at colder temps and i thought it was normal. Tech never mentioned or asked me if that "sound" was occuring. I wonder if its a sensor problem of some sort because if i drive around and then let idle. Smoke never seems to reappear and the car has alot of power. Just my experiance, so far that is..lol I named my car Penny, because she's not cheap.

one other thing is. I don't have a "rattle as you added. I don't know what thats all about.

My passenger turbo developed a whine/drill sound and about 500 miles afterwards it blew the seals which caused a very impressive wall of white smoke behind my car on one of the mornings. The upside was that it stopped whining since itwasn't rotating anymore :)

try replacing your PCV system first - could be somewhat clogged

post up an audio or video clip of it

or, search youtube for a video of the dentist drill turbos and compare
