Valve chatter....
I am looking at buying a 02' A6 2.7t. The odometer reads 98k and the t-belt job was done at 75K. It is chipped and has larger diverted valves with new stick turbos. It's pretty nice as new brakes but the top end sounds like the valves need adjustment. It runs perfect and the turbos work great! Do the valves have routine adjustments? Could this be a botched t-belt issue or just a need for synthetic oil? It's not very loud and most people might not notice. Any ideas?
Thank you!
Thank you!

Are you sure its valves? Could it possibly be spark knock? Try running high test or an octane boost, or both, in your tank and see if it quiets down. Predetonation can sound very rattley, and with all the computer controlled engines out there these days we're not very used to hearing it.

Is it noisy just at idle? Failed chain tensioners will make a tapping clattering sort of noise. These are very quiet engines, and have hydraulic lifters so no adjustment.

There is no adjustment on the lifters other than oil! +2 on cam chain tensioners. Spark knock isint going to happen unless the ECU isint doing its job. there is 20deg. or better of timing retard built into the ecu for detonation rendering it a nonissue
