When is a good time to replace the exhaust gas temp sensors? more..
There has been a dark cloud over my car for going a year now. Truthfully since I bought her.
The issue now is "limp mode" and while I have not determined that the turbos are complelty shot I can say that they are obnoxiously loud especially on a cold start.
Before this problem it was the smoke, rough idle and lack of boost, so I replaced the thermo-temp sensor. The car seemed to idle alot better and the smoke was gone I was amazed that it was so simple. The bad was that there is still no boost. I dropped the car off at Park Ave. A small shop in New Smyrna Beach Fl. to have this issue diagnosed. I recently read that these same related symptoms could be as simple to fix. A'la EGT sensors.

do you have any EGT codes?
here's my EGT rule: one code, no biggity. two codes, replace.
reasoning: one can be due to something weird, and yes, I've done it on brand new ones. don't ask. two means it's going to keep coming back.

Re: do you have any EGT codes?
I have exactly the same problem. Took the car last week to the mech. for a tune-up (sparks, filters, oil change) and the car is now blowing black smoke, missing in all cylinders, no boost, aaargh ! Not bad for $400+, huh ?
The car had excessive oil (one quart) requiring drainage.
My scan came up with the following codes:
17535 - Long Term Fuel Trim mult., Bank 1 System too Rich
17537 - Long Term Fuel Trim mult., Bank 2 System too Rich
17861 - Ehaust gas temperature sensor 1 open/short to B+
17870 - Exhaust gas temperature control bank 2 Range/Performance
17965 - Charge Pressure Contr. Positive Deviation
P1519 - Intake Camshaft Contr., Bank 1 Malfunction
P0300 - Random Misfire Detected-Any cylinder
What could it be ?
I really don't feel like taking it back to the same mech. Please help, anybody ???
