Default ABS Lights

Hello anyone who can help! My vehicle now has an intermittent warning signal --- the brake light comes on and ABS light flashes. When this is on, the ABS is not working. When it is off, it works OK (tested on our dirt road). I took it in today for an inspection (and felt like I went to the proctologist) --- they said I needed an ABS module. They replaced it 2-3 years ago, with a used one, and told me that the 1998 original modules had a small wire that broke from fatigue. Sounds fishy. Any ideas on where I should start?

Interestingly, and also fishier, they also told me that there was an "oil leak," and that it needed to be fixed to pass inspection. This is simply not true (see above; not that there are not leaks, but this is not an inspection item).

Thanks!

Default Re: ABS Lights

I found a couple places that claim $200 to rebuild ABS modules, with 5 year guarantee --- any experience out there with these?

Default I though it was generally the newer ones that had ABS problems

like the 1999 and newer.

Usually when an ABS module is truly bad VAGCOM won't recognize the module. What's the status on yours?

Pull the electrical connector and check for any corrosion or broken wires. Double check associated fuses and relays.

Modulemaster has a good reputation.

Junkyard parts are always a less expensive option.

Default My 1998 A4 ABS was replaced at 8 years ~140K

That was just before I got the car. I think the $700 bill the previous owner had to paid was the last dime he was going to put into that car.
