Default Best oils

I just picked up a 2001 a4 b5, and it`s time for a oil change. What is a good oil to use. My mechanic tells me to use Total 5w40. With filter that would be 66 bucks. I use mobil 1 products for many years and have had great success. Just replaced my wifes valve cover gasket on her 1.8t after 150.000 everything was clean. Total is hard to come by in my area. My mechanic is a Audi guy and has had a few. What do you think?

The Total oil you mention is a solid choice.

Oil needs to meet VAG 502.00 spec.

Mobil 1 0W40 meets this spec. W*mart typically has this oil for $24.xx for a 5qt jug...sometimes less when on special.

Enjoy!

Thanks for your reply. My mechanic did recommend not using the 0w40 but to use the 5w40 due to the miles on the clock. 142000 at this time. I was hoping to use Mobil 1 5w30 that I use on the wifes 1.8t so to not have 3 weights on hand.

Irrelevant. The 0W40 would make starting the car easier in a cold climate assuming that's a concern for you. Both oils are xw-40 when at operating temp

^^^Wrong oil unless it meets 502.00. If what you are referring to is the common M1 5W30, it doesn't meet the spec. OTOH, if we're ignoring specs, you can essentially run any oil of your liking.

So it's doesn't matter if it's 0w40, 5w30 as long as it is vw502, acea a3 approved?? My c5 a6 manual says...
new engine 0w30
at oil change 5w30
high temp service 5w40

I am looking into Ravenel HPS 5w30 both vw502 and acea a3 approved...
