Default 1st bad intake, 2nd bad ecu, 3rd bad left head---WTF

edit delete

2001 A6 4.2 -- 71k...babied from day one. I have a fluttering noise at 1100 rpm kinda metallic sounding...See subject for dealers BS. Still diagnosing the issue. ANy ideas on this sound..Car drives normal with no loss of power. Take off hte cover and the noise really gets loud. They replaced the intake and cam seal adjuster. Now they say its the ECU? Yeah right. Because a non mechanical computer chip makes a metallic sound.???Who knows..Other guys think its the head. Its not a rocket motor its a V8..Strip off the glitz and its a simple motor. Any

Sounds kind of like a bad cam adjuster, but unless I actually hear it it's hard to be sure.

Default Is it a creaking/fluttering noise?

I have a 4.2 A8 with the same noise. at the same RPM. There are about four or five other guys with 4.2's that have the same problem.

Does it only do this when warm? (mine does)

If you unplug the cam adjuster does the noise stop? (mine does)

I got a new ECU from Audi, that significantly reduced the noise, but still happens time to time. They replaced both cam tensioners but I still had the noise.

We actually have a running email about this from the D2 forum.

My engine is making a similar noise. Will unplugging the adjusters throw a code? Just curious : )

Default right, I started that email chain a while ago. One guy did have the problem fixed by getting the ECU

replaced. It's NOT the cam tensioner (I changed mine). Both of my 2000's do it. I have not heard this on a pre-faclift A8 (prior 2000) and willing to bet it's the same on the A6's.

It's not fatal, my wifes car has 145k on it and I'm almost at 100k. It's sounds like a "rattle" as around 1,200 RPM's right?

Yeah, its a fluttering around 1100-1200 RPM. It only does it when the car is warm. They replaced the cam tensioner and the entire intake hunting down the problem. They had my car for almost 3 weeks diagnosing it under warranty. My dealer was talking with AUDI direct and AUDI said it was a normal sound. They pulled another 4.2 off the lot and it made the same noise. It never made the noise before. It seems to be non-fatal as the car performs as it should. Its just annoying. Will the ECU replacement really fix this sound? What has the ECU got to do with a mechanical sound?

Default This is interesting since I just purchased an 00 A6 4.2 and it makes some odd noise around 1200 rpm.

It thought it was a tensioner or something with the timing belt since it is due. I will let you know if my car still makes noise after I change it.

Could the noise be related to the variable intake runners?
